Equipping women to become leaders

Building workforce capacity with Council’s Women in Leadership program.

The Cassowary Coast Regional Council, Queensland, is helping to equip more women across the organisation with the practical tools and skills required to become a future leader or manager.

Ten women from different departments are currently undergoing stage one of the Women in Leadership program which will take place over 16 weeks.

The first stage of the program includes four mentor sessions with successful women from both inside local government and the local business community.

These aspiring leaders will be able to put the skills obtained through the program to work during stages two and three.

Council’s Acting Executive Manager, Daniel Bradford, said the program had been put in place to not only empower employees, but to also benefit the organisation.

“Women play a vital role within our council, and this program serves to further develop their skills and recognise their contribution to our business.

“The key to this is broadening the talent pool to increase diversity and equity.”

The initiative came to fruition after the Executive Management Team saw the need to increase leadership culture.

“This is about individuals building confidence, personal and professional development and leveraging a professional network to achieve goals.

“We are extremely excited to see the outcomes of this program which will help us as an organisation to diversify management and broaden the skills base of our Council.”

The next round of the Women in Leadership program is expected to begin in early 2019.
