Dubbo Regional Council has welcomed a commitment of $30 million from the New South Wales Government to plan the expansion of the local underground water supply.
Mayor, Ben Shields, said the significant announcement for the city was extremely timely.
“Dubbo Regional Council has recently began its long term water security strategy following Councillor Gumley’s notice of Motion at last month’s Council Meeting.
“There’s no question our underground water supply is going to be crucial in getting us through one of the worst droughts on record and this funding will help to turn the plans into reality across the next two years.
“Dubbo’s current water supply is made up of 70 percent river water and 30 percent bore water split which may change due to the worsening conditions of the drought, making this investment into underground water very appropriate.”
The $30 million Dubbo project will be rolled out in two years commencing 1st July, 2019.
Member for Dubbo, Dugald Saunders, said it was important other sources of water were found to ensure the security of the expanding population.
“This is real money being invested into future proofing our water supply for our growing city while reducing our reliance on the Macquarie River.
“Dubbo Regional Council is extremely proactive in the space of water security and I commend their efforts so far.
“This funding is a collaborative approach as we work with the local council to secure the water supply for years to come.”
