Bio-glitter, a bike valet, free drinking water and compostable food packaging are just some of the environmentally-conscious measures now being used to make City of Gosnells, Western Australia, events more sustainable.
Mayor, David Goode, said the City felt a strong sense of responsibility to implement the changes to create a more energy and water efficient community and minimise waste.
“Some of our events bring together more than 10 to 15,000 people and these concentrated gatherings can generate significant waste. We need to encourage ways for people to think differently about what their consuming and how waste is disposed.
“New sustainability measures at our events have been very well received, particularly the bike valet service which gives residents secure priority ‘parking’ with free bike servicing.
“We’ve also introduced paperless ticketing, a shuttle bus service from the nearest train station to our event venue and free biodegradable bin bags for attendees to manage waste disposal.
“Working with our suppliers has allowed us to introduce face-painting artists who use bio-glitter, as well as encouraging all vendors to use certified compostable disposables while our free drinking water station gives people a chance to re-fill their water bottles.”
These event-based practises complement the City’s environmental focus elsewhere in its day-to-day operations, including energy efficient building development, water wise green space planning and community-based initiatives through the Switch your thinking program.
