Shire of Exmouth, Western Australia, is actively working to improve employment opportunities for local youth by working closely with the Exmouth District High School to enable and encourage the employment of year 12 graduates within the local government.
At the beginning of this year, three year 12 graduates were employed by Council in permanent positions, and the Shire will continue to support school work placements throughout the year.
In 2019, the Shire also received a Regional Traineeship Program Grant from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), which made it possible to employ a Tourism Trainee (SIT30116 Certificate III in Tourism) in 2020.
The grant program is dependent on the Royalties for Regions funding and is only available through a competitive funding round process, managed by DPIRD.
The funding provides local opportunities for young people to gain valuable qualifications and work experience that benefit the specific needs of a community.
Manager Human Resources and Governance, Kathleen Fish, said, “The Shire of Exmouth is a multi-disciplined organisation and can support school leavers to gain a broad range of workplace experience combined with training opportunities to assist them reach their full potential.”
