City of Palmerston, Northern Territory, has finalised its Lakes Management Plan to provide a coordinated and sustainable approach to the management of the thirteen lakes throughout the city.
The lakes in Palmerston are an important aesthetic asset for the community in addition to providing functional outcomes such as stormwater management and water quality treatment.
The lakes are a great place for the community to meet and enjoy, and play an important part of the local ecosystem, providing habitat for fish, birds, and reptiles.
The Lakes Management Plan provides a coordinated and proactive approach to the management of Palmerston’s lakes.
The primary function of the lakes has been identified for each lake, along with targeted strategies and performance indicators for maintaining each lake into the future.
To support the sustainable function of the lakes in Palmerston, the following activities will be the focus for the next year:
- targeted water monitoring programs
- aquatic vegetation management
- salvinia and algae control
- irrigation management planning and
- community education.
These actions will
complement and improve on existing management programs already in place, ensuring the long-term use of the lakes for all members of the community.
Mayor, Athina Pascoe-Bell said the new Lakes Management lan would not only benefit Palmerston’s lakes, but also provide an opportunity for community education.
“Palmerston lakes are a valuable community asset, greatly utilised and appreciated by us all. From participating in Hooked on Palmerston in the wet season, to enjoying Sanctuary Sessions in the dry, there are an array of activities available involving our wonderful lakes.
“This plan, coupled with community education, will ensure that our lakes can be enjoyed for generations to come.”
