The City of Cockburn won the Western Australia State Government’s inaugural 2014 Age Friendly Communities Local Government Award.
The City won the award for its Age Friendly Strategic Plan, the programs and projects that have been achieved under this plan and its ongoing community consultation with seniors and seniors’ groups.
Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett said winning this award was great recognition for all the highly valued services that the city offers and needs to continue to provide in the future.
“We provide some of the best seniors’ services and facilities in Western Australia; something that we are immensely proud of.
“This award is timely as our City is currently celebrating Senior’s Week with some great activities and events planned including our first Nyungar cultural experience at Bibra Lake.”
Some of the City’s age-friendly successes and initiatives include Cockburn Community Care who provides over 56,000 hours of service to 534 clients and their families and Kwobarup, a club for elderly and disabled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) people that has Home Care Packages dedicated to ATSI clients.
The City has also facilitated the development of two new Ageing in Place Housing Developments.
