Said Dr Tim Robinson, Director of Sector Engagement and Teaching at the Australian Centre of Excellence for Local Government (ACELG) at a graduation ceremony at the University of Technology, Sydney last month.
Based within UTS, ACELG offers tailored degrees such as the Master of Local Government and the Graduate Diploma of Local Government Management.
These unique degrees are aimed at unlocking the career potential of local government professionals and providing the skills to rise to leadership roles.
Recent Master degree graduates were Alison Ballind (Councillor, Griffith City Council) and Rebecca Ryan (General Manager, Blayney Shire Council).
Graduates of the Graduate Diploma of Local Government Management were Catherine Zammit (Manager, Children’s Services, Holroyd City Council), Paul Sullivan (Area Coordinator, City of Sydney), Patricia Kirkland (Projects Coordinator, Byron Shire Council ), and Jessica Quilty (Corporate Administration Officer, North Sydney Council).
“The course provided knowledge on how to research and implement alternative processes and ideas,” said Alison Ballind. “The supervisors were very encouraging and only too happy to provide advice and direction.”
Rebecca Ryan said the ACELG-UTS Masters degree has had a positive impact on her career: “After completing my Masters, I applied for and was successful in being appointed the new General Manager of Blayney Shire Council.”
