A State-Local Government Relations agreement has been signed in South Australia that aims to achieve a closer strategic alignment between the two spheres of government.
The agreement was signed by South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill and the President of the Local Government Association of South Australia, Mayor David O’Loughlin, and was witnessed by Local Government Minister, Geoff Brock.
The signing took place at the Premier’s State/Local Government Forum Executive Committee meeting in Adelaide.
The agreement recognises the need for State and Local Government to work collaboratively to achieve better outcomes for all South Australian communities through the improved efficiency, effectiveness and co-ordination of State services and infrastructure.
It commits both spheres of government to regular and effective communication, consultation and negotiation on implementing key policies, legislative proposals and significant projects affecting both parties.
The agreement also recognises the value in seeking each other’s support when making representations to the Commonwealth on matters of significance affecting State and Local Government.
The Forum brings together the leaders of State and Local Government and relevant unions to discuss matters of mutual interest and to enhance cooperation for the benefit of South Australian communities.
