The Heart Foundation Local Government Awards recognise and showcase councils who are working to improve heart health through building a sense of community, encouraging people to be physically active, be smoke-free and make healthy food choices.
In 2014 Port Augusta City Council in South Australia received the best practice awards for Councils with populations of 15,000 or less, with Guyra Shire Council in New South Wales receiving a high commendation.
Lismore City Council in New South Wales was the winner for councils with a population greater than 15,000, and both Whyalla City Council in South Australia and Glenorchy City Council in Tasmania received high commendations.
Other winners included MacDonnell Regional Council as the Northern Territory winner for Councils with population of 15,000 or less, and Moreton Bay Regional Council as the Queensland state winner for councils with populations greater than 15,000.
Cardinia Shire Council was the Victorian state winner for councils with populations greater than 15,000.
