A homelessness accommodation and support service in Maranoa will remain open after a solution for the service’s future was brokered between the Queensland Government and Maranoa Regional Council.
The service provides immediate accommodation and support to young people, adults and families until a longer-term solution is found.
Housing and Public Works Minister Leeanne Enoch said the facility was previously operated by Maranoa Regional Council and will now be managed by St Vincent De Paul Society Queensland.
“The Department of Housing and Public Works has brokered a solution to ensure the homelessness service continues to be available in the region.
“St Vincent de Paul started managing the facility on 1 April 2015, and has a proven track record in providing homelessness services and helping the Roma community.”
Maranoa Mayor Robert Loughnan said the program, which operates ten individual properties in Roma, will continue to provide support to residents in need of emergency housing.
“The current residents can be confident that they will continue in their current accommodation and be supported by the St Vincent de Paul Society Housing Support Officer.”
St Vincent de Paul Society Toowoomba Diocesan Council President John Elich said that it was important to continue this vital service to the community.
“We would like to thank the Department of Housing and Public Works for providing the financial support to continue with this important work.
“We will bring our successful Cornerstone Program Model to Roma providing wrap around services to support those facing homelessness to assist them to move into independent living.
“This additional emergency housing will add to the 23 long-term affordable houses, including disability housing options the society currently offers in the
Roma Community.”
