Students provided with Youth Services Information Card

Burdekin high school students will this week receive a card that could save their life, according to Burdekin Shire Council’s Community Development Manager Tony Vaccaro.

Mr Vaccaro said the Burdekin Building Safer Communities Action Team’s (BSCAT) initiative would ensure all students had contact details of possible help lines and advocacies they could turn to in times of need.

“BSCAT has joined forces with the Burdekin Shire Youth Council and Burdekin Police-Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) Youth Management Team to ensure the message is getting to our vulnerable youth.

“We will be addressing each high school in our region and leaving the cards for distribution amongst their students.

“There have been a number of very sad incidents involving youth recently and we want to help prevent any more.

“These cards will allow students who feel they can’t talk to family, friends or teachers, to contact someone who can help them deal with their problem.”

Mr Vaccaro said information from the cards would also be available on the Burdekin Shire Youth Council’s Facebook Page.

“All you have to do is like the Burdekin Shire Youth Council’s Facebook Page and download the images with the information on to your phone for ease of use later.

“We encourage all youth to keep a copy of the card in a safe place, although they might not think they will ever need it, they never know when a friend or loved one might need help.

“The cards will be circulated through each of the high schools over the coming week and will also be available at the Burdekin Library branches and the Burdekin Community Association.”
