Boroondara plans community garden for popular reserve

In planning for the redevelopment of one of its reserves, Boroondara City Council in Melbourne’s east has earmarked a place for a community garden.

The garden will provide a place where local residents can come together with a common purpose and build a sense of community and belonging.

It will also allow people to grow their own fruit and vegetables to supplement their meals with home grown produce.

The proposal was initiated by the local Rotary Club, in conjunction with the Department of Human Services. It was then included in Council’s Master Plan, which was adopted late last year.

“A community garden could mean many things for our community,” said Councillor Kevin Chow. “It could provide a means for lower income families to grow their own food, as well as support community connectedness.

“It gives people from all backgrounds the opportunity to garden and socialise together.”

The full garden design will provide approximately 45 plots, along with associated site fencing, a picnic shelter and storage shed, as well as an orchard and communal herb and flower beds.

The first stage of implementation of the garden will commence within the next few months, with the opportunity for further community involvement.

Council will also assist the establishment of a committee of management for the garden, comprising interested local residents.
