Developing great careers

Glen Eira’s job secondment program provides opportunities for employees to act in higher level positions when a supervisor or manager is away and also to work in different departments from their own.

For example, Business Directions Manager Phil De Losa has acted as Manager of Arts, Director of City Development and Manager of Public Relations and Marketing. He commented that the roles took him out of his comfort zone and helped him develop his management skills.

HR Manager Betsie Young completed a six-week secondment as Manager Aged Care, which she said was extremely rewarding. She added that the secondment provided a greater understanding of the requirements and constraints of other business units and an opportunity to build even better relationships within Council.

All vacant positions at Council are advertised internally, which provides many career development opportunities. Staff can move upwards or sideways into new positions. Some go all the way from entry level positions to management.

For example, Roger Dunn, who started 15 years ago as a driver-labourer and is now Manager of Works.
