McKinlay Shire Council in northern Queensland has purchased a Toyota Prius.
The Prius is a hybrid electric vehicle that uses a combination of conventional propulsion
and electric propulsion. This dual propulsion system achieves better fuel economy than a standard vehicle and is better for the environment.
McKinlay’s Prius will operate in and around the Shire’s central town of Julia Creek as a staff vehicle to support the day to day operations of Council.
McKinlay Shire Mayor, Paul Woodhouse, said purchasing the Prius was a brave move for Council.
“In this era, where climate change is still treated with scepticism by some, buying the Prius was the first of several initiatives Council will introduce as it jogs down the path into whatever the future holds, together with its residents,” Councillor Woodhouse said.
“When compared with a 3.0 litre diesel vehicle, we should, based on current fuel prices in Julia Creek, save about $2,300 per annum in fuel costs.
The Prius should also reduce our carbon emissions by just under 3,700 tonnes per year.”
The very distinctive vehicle was delivered to Council in early September and can now be seen driving around Julia Creek.
