Olympian helps promote Mackay

Mackay Regional Council’s very own Olympic gold medallist and PR Administrations Officer, Linda MacKenzie, has helped fellow Council staff to sell the virtues of the Mackay region.

Joining Council’s Economic Development Manager Julie Cardiff, portfolio Councillor David Perkins, Mackay Tourism representative Lyn Egan and Barry Lynham from the Mackay branch of the Real Estate Institute, Linda manned Council’s stand at the Country and Regional Living Expo in Brisbane from 30 October to
1 November.

Together, the team promoted the benefits of living in the Mackay region and encouraged city residents to make the move north.

Mackay Mayor Col Meng said Linda MacKenzie was the ideal ambassador for the local region.

“Council is certainly proud to have Linda as an employee as she typifies the true Aussie spirit of hard work, dedication
and a will to win,” he said.

Linda MacKenzie was a key member of the world record breaking Women’s 4 x 200 metre relay team that clinched gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

The swim signalled her retirement from the sport and resulted in the 25 year old returning to her home city of Mackay to start the next chapter of her career.

Linda is an integral part of Council’s Corporate Communications team and enjoyed visiting the expo to entice people from the southeast to consider relocating to the Mackay region.

“Mackay has always been my home and when
I finished swimming, I had no hesitation in returning,” she said.

“The relaxed lifestyle, climate and strong economy makes it the ideal place for families and provides a diverse range of opportunities.”

People visiting the stand were able to taste award winning sauces from the Sarina Sugar Shed and win fabulous prizes.

Councillor Meng attended the official opening and also joined other mayors to cook breakfast in the Brisbane Mall.

“This expo was the ideal venue to promote the region’s economic, lifestyle and career opportunities,” Councillor Meng said.
