Indigenous community members are learning more about preparing for an emergency at ‘Express Redi’ sessions at Swan Hill and Robinvale in Victoria.
Swan Hill Rural City Council Flood Recovery Officer, Rachel King and Red Cross volunteer, Vicki Holland have been discussing with participants how to plan for an emergency and how to prepare an emergency kit.
Ms King said participants had been learning practical tips on how to prepare themselves, their homes and their communities.
“Given last year’s flood event and grassfire season now upon us, now is the time for people to get prepared,” she said.
The events are among the first projects by Council’s new Aboriginal Community Planning Officer, Verna Eade.
“The interest the Indigenous community has shown towards these sessions has been great,” Ms Eade said.
“Some of the participants were concerned about the possibility of an emergency occurring and not being prepared, so this has helped them to plan ahead,” she said.
