Bridgetown-Greenbushes wins road safety award

Western Australia’s Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes recently received the Local Government Road Safety Award at the third International Road Safety Conference staged in Perth. With this year’s event hosted by Western Australia’s Road Safety Council, the conference aims to reduce human and financial losses from road crashes.

The Local Government Road Safety Award recognises Bridgetown-Greenbushes’ strong commitment to road safety, which was demonstrated through targeted implementation of road safety projects and initiatives in the community.

Western Australia Local Government Association (WALGA) President, Councillor Bill Mitchell, congratulated the Shire on the win. He said it proves that Councils can make a strong contribution to road safety in their community.

“Bridgetown-Greenbushes Council, staff and the RoadWise Committee have shown their commitment to the current Western Australian Road Safety Strategy and the Safe System approach – safe roads and roadsides, safe vehicles, safe road users and safe speeds,” Councillor Mitchell said. “This well rounded approach has been achieved through initiatives such as roads programs, Black Spot and Roads to Recovery road improvements, fleet safety policies and programs, road safety audits, vehicle safety and maintenance courses, speed reduction projects and promotion of the ‘big four’ behaviours – drink driving, speeding, wearing of restraints and fatigue.

“Winning this award is a credit to everyone involved and demonstrates the Shire’s leadership in road safety. The fact that they have implemented initiatives to address safer roads, vehicles, speeds and road users is a real achievement.”

RoadWise is WALGA’s Community Road Safety Program and has been in operation since 1994.

In addition to receiving the award and certificate, the Shire was also presented with a $1000 prize.
