For the first time ever, the City of Sydney celebrated last Christmas with green powered Christmas lights. The energy taken to light the City of Sydney’s Martin Place Christmas tree and all its Christmas decorations were matched with GreenPower accredited energy. This saved an estimated 51 tonnes of net greenhouse gas emissions, which is the same as removing more than a dozen cars from the roads for an entire year.
GreenPower is an accredited renewable energy sourced from the sun, wind, water and waste.
For every kilowatt of electricity used for the City of Sydney’s Christmas tree and decorations project sponsor, EnergyAustralia, ensured an equivalent amount of energy from a GreenPower accredited project was delivered to the national electricity grid.
The 22 metre tall Martin Place Christmas tree also underwent an environmentally friendly makeover to light up the CBD in an energy efficient way. Council used LED lights, which produce more light per watt than incandescent bulbs, thus using less energy.
City of Sydney Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, said Christmas is a time to think of others and a time to think about the environment.
“We are committed to environmental sustainability and this goal is built into every City project we undertake,” she said.
