Ross Povey, Director Planning and Development, at the City of Stirling has been awarded a Conservation and Sustainability Practitioner Fellowship from the Alcoa Foundation.
City of Stirling CEO, Stuart Jardine, said Ross Povey was selected for the fellowship from a competitive group of candidates worldwide.
“It is understood that this is the first Alcoa Foundation Practitioner Fellowship to be awarded in Australia,” Stuart Jardine said. “With conservation and sustainability at the forefront of Council decision making processes, the fellowship will assist the City of Stirling in establishing its position as an industry leader in this field.”
Ross Povey said the fellowship provides an exciting opportunity to pursue research into the creation of sustainable ‘eco-communities’ around some of Perth’s inner city rail stations.
The research will draw on experiences in other cities, such as Vancouver in Canada, which has recently developed an ‘eco-density’ initiative.
“City of Stirling train stations like Glendalough and Stirling, have very significant potential for new and exciting development, including residential and commercial uses,” he said.
The research will also examine sustainable building forms and opportunities for public and private sector partnerships to facilitate implementation.
With the rapidly increasing costs of private car transport, and increasing congestion from urban sprawl, planning for a significant increase in the mix and density of development around rail stations is particularly critical and builds naturally on the State Government’s investment in the northern and southern suburbs’ rail lines.
Ross Povey said he is looking forward to completing this research over the next 12 months.
