New boardwalk provides access for all

A wider range of Ryde residents can now enjoy The Field Of Mars Reserve, following the recent opening of a new equal access, elevated boardwalk.

The Field of Mars Reserve is the largest remnant bushland reserve under the care, control and management of the City of Ryde, which is located in the central north of metropolitan Sydney. It comprises a number of trails and walks, as well as an education centre.

The new boardwalk was developed by Council with funding assistance from the Federal Government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

Ryde Mayor Michael Butterworth said the project will benefit the entire community, from bushwalkers, ecologists, students and people with restricted mobility, including wheelchair users.

“The Buffalo Creek walking trail is one of the joys of our community – a bushland oasis in the heart of Ryde,” he said. “Importantly seven full time workers were engaged directly on this project, which has helped keep our local economy ticking over.”

The Buffalo Creek Boardwalk Track project delivered:

  • an equal access elevated
    boardwalk replacing
    approximately one
    kilometre of the Cannon
    Walk built in 1992
  • improved access to natural
    trails and bushlands
  • new interpretative and
    directional signage
  • additional picnic and rest
    areas
  • a boost to local jobs,
    including seven full time
    workers.
