Wash Against Waste Trailer
As part of the popular Castlemaine State Festival’s journey towards being a carbon neutral event, a local initiative called the Wash Against Waste Trailer was launched last year.
The trailer was developed with grant funding from Council in conjunction with Mount Alexander Sustainability Group.
It aims to minimise the amount of landfill waste generated by food caterers and vendors at outdoor events in the Shire.
High quality melamine crockery and stainless steel cutlery has been purchased as part of the trailer setup. These will be used as an alternative to the plastic and paper plates, cups and cutlery, which are the current standard at events.
The intention is to distribute the reusable utensils to food vendors at the start of an event. Once used, they are then collected from points around the event site, taken to the onsite wash up trailer, washed to Health Department regulation standards, and returned to vendors for reuse.
This process is already widely used in Melbourne and has been trialled in Castlemaine at the Castlemaine State Festival and at the Taradale Mineral Springs Festival with considerable success and interest.
“Our Shire is well known for its events,” said Mayor Philip Schier. “To have this facility available for event organisers is a real bonus as we continue to work towards a sustainable future.”
