New ways of doing business to meet the needs of local communities

The National General Assembly of Local Government (NGA) is the premiere Local Government event bringing together around 700 representatives from Councils across Australia to develop policy ideas, meet with key Federal politicians and hear from renowned experts on the key issues affecting Local Government in Australia.

The theme for this year’s NGA, ‘Growing with our Community – Place, Position and Partnership’, is aimed at stimulating delegates to develop new ways of doing business to meet the needs of local communities.

The three elements of the theme allow for an exploration of the challenges facing governments and local communities:

• ‘Place’ recognises that people live and work in specific locations and local communities. These places and communities differ geographically, culturally, economically and socially

• ‘Position’ refers to the need for Local Government to be seen and treated as an integral part of the Australian Federal system.

• ‘Partnership’ recognises that government service provision, including regulation, is a shared responsibility. While Local Government provides a wide range of services and infrastructure many of these are in partnership with other levels of government.

The campaign for Constitutional reform continues to be a strategic priority for Local Government and delegates will hear about the progress of the technical and political aspects of the case for reform. The NGA program features a panel session, with John Hewson, Jane Caro and Annabel Crabb, looking at the development of a public relations campaign – essentially the pitch to sell Local Government.
