Seniors on sustainability

Randwick City Council recently launched its first sustainability book, Legacies for a Better World: Seniors on Sustainability, providing tried and tested tips on sustainable living. This innovative project involved 22 seniors who attended a series of weekly experimental writing workshops to explore their relationship with the earth and their understanding of sustainability issues.

Local author and trainer, Joanne Fedler, facilitated the workshops. The prose, poetry, memoirs and eco tips were collated into a book and award winning Coogee based photographer, Israel Smith, photographed the participants interacting with the environment.

Randwick Mayor Murray Matson is extremely pleased with the resulting 200 page sustainability book.

“The project has helped create a sense of cohesion, purpose and belonging for the writing workshop participants, while providing our community’s elders with an opportunity to share their memories and sustainability experiences,” he said.”The stories, poems and recollections contained in this book are testaments to their strength of character, family ties and connection with the land.”

Lesley Potter was one of the 22 senior participants.

“I knew the book would look good, but it far exceeds my expectations,” she said. “It is beautiful, as well as containing some practical and useful information about sustainability. Thanks for the opportunity to be involved in such a great project from beginning to end.”

The book will be sold to the public for $10, with proceeds being used to fund further sustainability projects for seniors, including the newly formed Seniors on Sustainability Group.
