Hurstville City Council is currently developing a management plan for its golf course to ensure it is used to its full potential. Council has engaged the services of a sports and leisure planning and management consultancy firm, Smart Connection Company, to provide advice and management solutions.
Hurstville Mayor, Councillor Vince Badalati, said with an average of 50,000 visitors per year, Hurstville Golf Course is one of Council’s most important recreational facilities.
“We want to provide local residents and visitors with the best golfing facilities available,” he said. “In order to create such a high quality facility, we need to put a sound management structure in place.”
Council is working with Smart Connection Company to:
- optimise the needs of local golfers
- improve the quality of the course
- provide improved and additional community services at the golf course through the recently developed golf club
- ensure efficient use of the open space of the golf course
- implement water and energy saving measures.
Council is currently investigating the benefits of water harvesting and sub surface water to irrigate the course. Bores have already been sunk at the golf course, but Council is deciding whether it would be best to treat this water or use water harvested from the roof of the venue.
Mayor Badalati said Council’s decision to develop options for the upgrade of the golf course has attracted the attention of the peak national golfing body, Golf Australia.
“Golf Australia is looking to partner with Local Government to encourage people to play golf, as well as promote the many physical and social benefits of the sport,” he said. “It is also aiming to pilot a development golfing program for junior players which, if successful, will be used as a guideline across golf courses throughout Australia.”
The management plan will be put before Council in coming months.
