Risk management course for event organisers

Last month, the City of Geraldton-Greenough held two free workshops targeting local event organisers on carrying out risk management.

Council’s Community Development Officer, Yvonne Lovedee, said it is vital that anyone who is involved in an event learns about risk management.

“Many of the steps in a risk management plan relate to good event organisation, but it is a really valuable process to carry out,” she said. “The workshop covered the definition of risk management, accountabilities, responsibilities and the process for compiling a plan.

“The idea of risk management is to consider all of the possible occurrences, think about how likely they are to happen and what would be the consequences if they did. Risk management is a requirement for any public event, which need to gain approval from the City of Geraldton-Greenough.”

The workshop also covered Community Groups Insurance. Yvonne Lovedee said some groups are paying exorbitant amounts for public liability insurance.

“The workshop program was flexible, and we were happy to work with community groups to achieve a good level of insurance cover,” she said.

Approximately 40 people participated. Each participant was given a workbook and guidelines to use as a future resource when planning an event.
