Penrith City residents can feel assured that the management of the City is in safe hands, with Council winning a Gold Award for Management Excellence at the annual Sydney Morning Herald Local Government Management Excellence Awards for New South Wales. Announced in September, these awards aim to inspire Councils and communities to make a genuine and lasting contribution to their areas and Local Government.
Penrith’s Accountant, Andrew Moore, was also named ‘Aspiring Young Manager of the Year’.
Penrith Mayor, Councillor Greg Davies, said Council had now won an award for the third year running, exemplifying the high regard in which Penrith is held in Local Government.
“This is the award’s 16th year and it is one of the most prestigious events in Local Government,” Mayor Davies said. “Council received the Gold Award for its new Management Plan model. The Management Plan is Council’s annual blueprint, detailing all of its plans for the year ahead in each of its 65 service areas.
“The new 2007/08 Management Plan is radically different, integrating Council’s Strategy for the City, sustainability objectives and services more strongly. It now incorporates the UN Principles for Sustainable Cities so that every Council service can be delivered in a comprehensive sustainability context.”
Mayor Davies said Council’s Accountant, Andrew Moore, won his award for supervision of Council’s financial accounting team. This team is responsible for annual financial statements, Council’s $50 million investment portfolio, loan portfolio, asset accounting, accounts payable and expenditure functions.
“Andrew played a key role in simplifying Council’s Annual Statements, making the technical, yet important information easily accessible and reader friendly,” Mayor Davies said.
The 2005–06 Annual Statements were recognised earlier this year at the New South Wales Local Government Finance Professionals Conference, winning the New South Wales Local Government Annual Statements Award.
