Trial to reduce fuel consumption and emissions

Located ten kilometres from Sydney’s CBD, the City of Canada Bay is supporting a trial by Cleanaway, Firepower and Techenomics to improve fuel consumption and reduce emissions. Due to commence in January 2007, the trial aims to reduce exhaust emissions and the volume of fuel used by Cleanaway through its waste contract with the City of Canada Bay.

Techenomics operates three laboratories specifically for conducting oil and wear debris analysis. Their mission is to create opportunities to reduce costs through systems, processes and expertise in condition monitoring by oil analysis and the total management of lubricants, including waste oil management and recycling.

Firepower is committed to significantly reducing harmful emissions by providing technology that makes fuel burn more efficiently.

Canada Bay Councillor, Neil Kenzler, said that fuels costs are one of the major components of the City’s waste contract.

“A reduction in fuel consumption will reduce the cost of fuel, thus assisting the City in keeping costs in its waste contract to a minimum,” he said. “On the basis that the use of Firepower in the Cleanaway vehicles is successful, Canada Bay’s goal of creating a cleaner environment will be enhanced. A reduction in emissions means that the community benefits from less pollutants being emitted in local residential streets, as well as assisting with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.”

Cleanaway currently uses a fleet of ten diesel vehicles to service Canada Bay. As part of the trial, the fuel records of all ten trucks will be assessed. Five trucks will then be selected to operate on Firepower’s FP4000 dosed fuel, while the remaining five will continue to operate on normal fuel, thus providing a control for the trial.

Firepower FP4000 is a liquid fuel conditioner for diesel fuel. Techenomics will purge the fuel system of the five trucks that are to run on FP4000 and will provide a technician to monitor refuelling and ensure each of the Firepower trucks is correctly dosed. Techenomics will also arrange for exhaust emissions testing to be conducted during the trial.

Councillor Kenzler said there will be no cost to Cleanaway or Council until a five per cent reduction in fuel consumption is achieved.

“At that point, a cost of 1.5 cents per litre of diesel fuel used will be applied,” he said. “Over the trial, Techenomics will provide weekly reports to Cleanaway on the performance of the vehicles. At the conclusion of the trial, Canada Bay General Manger, Gary Sawyer, will compile a report for Council on the outcome of the trial, including the financial and environmental impacts.”
