Suburban venue for Bike Week ride

Competition was fierce but friendly at the Western Australian Department of Infrastructure’s first suburban Parliamentarians Bike Ride for Cycle Instead Bike Week 2006. Held in March in the City of Gosnells, it was the first time the event has been held outside of Perth CBD.

Gosnells’ Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Jardine, better known for his strategic vision in Local Government circles than his cycling prowess, proved to be the surprise package. After breaking from the pack at the halfway point, he held the lead and claimed first place in the 13 kilometre ride.

Rivalry aside, the event from Mills Park in Beckenham to The Agonis in Gosnells was hailed a great success. The riding group included staff from the City of Gosnells and other metropolitan Local Governments, various State Government departments and Members of Parliament as part of an annual campaign promoting the health and environmental benefits of cycling.

As a former recipient of Australia’s most cycle friendly Local Government award, Gosnells has been a strong supporter of cycling. It is well known for its intensive three year works program to complete a quality shared path network that covers some 570 kilometres. The path includes pedestrian and cycle ways as well as a bridle and walk trail.
