SCU offers flexible study programs*

Southern Cross University offers a range of flexible study programs ideal for people wanting to upgrade their skills or looking for a career change. The Bachelor of Legal and Justice Studies and the Associate Degree in Law (Paralegal) are popular, providing a range of specialised majors including Local Government, commerce, employment and industrial relations and public sector law.

SCU has recently introduced a short course in Local Government and Planning Law, which is available by distance education. The course includes units such as Local Government and planning law, environmental law, consultation and participation, and mediation and dispute resolution.

One of last year’s graduates of the Bachelor of Legal and Justice Studies, Amarlie Dent, of Orange, said she chose the SCU course because of its good reputation and the flexibility to complete the entire program by distance mode. Following her graduation, Amarlie opened her own conveyancing business and is now enrolled in the Bachelor of Laws program.

“As the mother of two girls I know there’s no easy formula for doing well in your studies, but I study when the girls are asleep and I’ve been driven by the need to plan for my family’s future,” Amarlie said.

Head of School of Law and Justice, Professor Stanley Yeo, said that SCU’s law programs had been rated first in the country out of 29 universities for overall student satisfaction.

“The Bachelor of Legal and Justice Studies is ideal for people who want to have a good working knowledge of the law, but don’t want to become a solicitor or barrister,” Professor Yeo said. “Any kind of law study is of benefit in most jobs these days.

“We have got good support mechanisms for distance education students and offer non compulsory weekend workshops as well as skills workshops to prepare students for university study.”
