Council satisfies strict auditing requirements with Centennial Discovery*

Victoria’s Greater Dandenong City Council uses Centennial Software’s asset management system, Discovery 2005, to manage its IT infrastructure and track software licensing. Greater Dandenong chose to invest in Discovery after testing a variety of shareware and freeware solutions, none of which were capable of satisfying its strict audit requirements for software licensing compliance. Centennial Discovery manages and monitors Council’s hardware and software assets across five networks throughout the Greater Dandenong region.

Council has some 550 desktop and 40 notebook computers connected to its network. Because 95 per cent of its assets are leased for up to four years at a time, Greater Dandenong needed a dynamically updated picture of where the devices were located and to ensure PC integrity. Previously, auditors would scan barcodes on Council’s PCs and compare this to an asset registry. Software loaded onto each desktop or notebook was also cross checked manually against the Council’s software licenses.

“Doing the audit manually took quite a lot of time,” said Grant Griffiths, Customer Support Manager at Greater Dandenong City Council. “Implementing Discovery 2005 a few months ago has already saved us a significant amount of time in automating what used to take hours to do manually. Staff can now do the job much faster and with greater accuracy.

“Discovery gives a definite measure of device assets on the network, allowing us to forecast software requirements and perform checks for upgrades. It’s given the Council a complete tool to help its IT asset management decision making.”
