Volunteers stretch dollars further

The number of volunteers in Mount Alexander is continually rising. CEO, Adrian Robb, said volunteers play a huge role in the sustainability of facilities, programs and services and being involved on local town improvement committees.

“They underpin the whole Shire,” he said. “If we did not have volunteers, the funds available to Council would not go nearly as far.”

Volunteer roles are many and varied in the community, through involvement in committees of management, advisory committees, running of recreational facilities and halls and social support services, to name but a few. The Shire’s six outdoor swimming pools have some 150 volunteers, assisting with everything from lifeguard duties to cutting the grass.

Manager Community Planning, Deb Simpson, said the strong volunteer culture contributes greatly to a vibrant community spirit.

“Their willingness to actively participate is what sustains many of our community’s facilities, programs and services,” she said. “We simply do not have the available funds to sustain other operational models.”

She said volunteer participation within the community is also high due to the social opportunities and connectedness that volunteering can present.

Recreation Officer, Lincoln Fitzgerald, said it is important to show volunteers that they are valued.

“One way we thank our volunteers is through providing opportunities for upskilling, with Council providing training in areas such as first aid and IT,” he said. “Not only does this upskilling of community members keep our services running smoothly, but it furthers volunteers’ career opportunities and personal development.

“Council also acknowledges volunteers’ contributions through formal Council reports, civic receptions and letters of thanks.”

Adrian Robb said that the community’s willingness to offer their time through volunteer work demonstrates people’s passion and commitment to the Shire.

“This is a highly valued place to live,” he said.
