More than 1200 mayors, shire presidents, councillors and local government leaders from across the nation will converge in Canberra this month for the 31st National General Assembly (NGA).
The NGA – hosted by the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) – is the biggest national gathering of council leaders and elected representatives in Australia.
Since 1994, councils have been visiting Canberra to engage with political leaders and each other to advocate for more federal funding and effective partnerships to build better and more sustainable communities.
An extensive line-up of high-profile speakers, hosts and panellists has been assembled for this year’s NGA, from 24-27 June at the National Convention Centre, with a theme of ‘National Priorities Need Local Solutions’.
The annual event begins with the 2025 Regional Cooperation and Development Forum on 24 June, allowing delegates from regional areas to discuss a range of issues and challenges. This year’s forum includes sessions on the state of the regions, driving efficiency through technology, rural mental health, creating vibrant communities and safer roads.
Keynote speakers for the forum include leading social commentator and demographer Bernard Salt, National Rural Health Commissioner Professor Jenny May and road safety expert Kenn Beer.
All delegates are encouraged to stay for the final day on Friday 27 June, where well-known ABC political journalist David Speers will facilitate conversations with new and returned Federal Ministers on their plans and ideas for working with local government.
This will be a valuable opportunity for councils to hear directly from Australia’s political leaders, and report back to their communities.
This year, there have been a record number of NGA motions submitted by councils, which will provide robust discussion and debate on the Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
As part of the NGA, there will also be a large showcase of exhibitors and sponsor booths from local government suppliers, supporters and government agencies.
