Push button safety in Perth

By world standards, Perth is a relatively safe and secure city. However, the City of Perth has taken steps to improve safety further and increase people’s sense of security. As part of the Perth SafeCity initiative, Council has upgraded emergency communication poles in six city locations to make them easier to see and raise public awareness of their purpose.

The poles are now coloured blue with police marking on top. Previously they were coloured red. City of Perth’s Chief Executive Officer, Frank Edwards, said the emergency poles have direct push button audio communication to the Citywatch Police Post. This is staffed around the clock by police officers and City security staff.

“The poles have closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras which are monitored at the centre,” Frank Edwards said. “When the system is activated, a flashing light is triggered and City security staff alert police immediately.”

Council is also seeking to increase public awareness of CCTV cameras in the city by installing indicative signage on poles in selected locations.

Frank Edwards said there are 120 CCTV cameras throughout the city but some people were not aware they were there.

“Signs will be installed on the rear of parking restriction signs at about 35 key locations, including major pedestrian access routes,” he said. “Increased public awareness of the cameras can reinforce public perceptions of a safer environment.”

The City of Perth has also produced a new publication titled Perth SafeCity which outlines initiatives undertaken by the Council to improve safety.
