Striving for just communities

The Local Government Community Services Association of Australia National Conference, Just Communities, will be held on the 25–28 of October 2005 at Hilton on the Park, Melbourne. The conference will focus on wellbeing and the concepts of active citizenship, links between local democracy, good governance, civic engagement and community empowerment, human rights, cultural vitality, community planning, and health and leisure.

The keynote address will be delivered by Arnold Zable, award winning writer, educator and human rights advocate who will discuss ‘Australia: A Land of Journeys, A Community of Cultures’.

Hilary Charlesworth, Professor of International Law and Human Rights at Australian National University, will be addressing ‘Human Rights: Is Australia the Frozen Continent’. Julian Burnside QC, who has acted as counsel in a range of human rights and justice cases will be contributing in the Just Communities Panel: Human Rights and Justice.

Other speaker include Dr Christina Gilgren, Executive Director of the Office of Citizens and Civics, Western Australian Department of the Premier and Cabinet; Graham Sansom, Associate Professor and Director of the UTS Centre for Local Government; Dr Lyn Carson, senior lecturer with the School of Economics and Political Science, University of Sydney; and Evan Thornley, current proprietor of Australia’s premier social issues book publisher, and active in business, education, the community sector and public policy.

A highlight of the conference will be the announcement and presentation of the Jenny Slade Scholarship.
