Bulimba Creek Catchment Association has taken out the 2005 National Thiess Riverprize awarded for excellence in river management. The prestigious $50,000 Riverprize is awarded each year to an outstanding Australian river or catchment restoration project.
Presented at the 8th International Riversymposium on 7 September, Bulimba Creek Catchment Association in Brisbane took out the award over four other finalists.
Paroo River Association (New South Wales and Queensland border), Environs Kimberley (Fitzroy River region of Western Australia), and Tweed Shire Council (Tweed River New South Wales) were all recognised for their outstanding efforts in restoring, protecting and managing river systems and catchments.
Hard working volunteers and members of Brisbane’s Bulimba Creek Catchment Association caught the eye of the judges to win this prestigious award.
Held in Brisbane, the International Riversymposium is a forum focusing on world’s best practice river and catchment management. The International Riversymposium is a wake up call to better preserve and manage water resources.
This year’s theme, ‘Water and Food Security – Rivers in a Global Context’, looked at the challenge of meeting human needs for water while keeping our river systems healthy.
The forum is an integral part of Brisbane City Council’s annual broad based cultural event, the Riverfestival. Leading water experts from around the world attended this global event to address some of the world’s most pressing water related issues.
