New England Smart Communities Project

Citizens in Uralla now have the opportunity to connect to broadband following an innovative project by their Council. Uralla Shire Council has become the anchor of a broadband operation of which the whole community can take advantage.

The New England Smart Communities Action Project (NESCAP) was recently selected as a Category Winner in the Information Technology Category of the 2004 National Awards for Local Government.

NESCAP Executive Officer, Kevin Abey, said Local Government now does far more than roads, rates and rubbish.

Uralla Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Ron Filmer, was delighted with the announcement of Council’s success. Councillor Filmer added this now meant that the NESCAP entry was one of 18 finalists in judging for the overall National Award to be announced in Canberra on 7 November 2004.

“Kevin Abey, as Executive Officer of NESCAP, has worked tirelessly to bring about broadband services for Uralla,” he said. “Council’s operations and that of the New England Strategic Alliance of Councils – Armidale Dumaresq, Uralla Shire Council, Guyra, and Walcha – will benefit from improved communications between Council sites and businesses and the general community will benefit from services that can be delivered online by broadband.”
