St Francis smiling in Warringah

The methods and messages used by St Francis of Assisi to advocate ‘simple living’ in Medieval Europe are being revived to promote ‘green lifestyles’ in modern day Warringah, on Sydney’s north shore. An environmental lifestyle program – named ‘Living Waters – Living Communities’ – is being pioneered by Warringah Council in partnership with the leading environmental group, Oz GREEN.

The innovative project has been assisted financially by the NSW Government’s Stormwater Trust.

“This program, with its strong environmental emphasis is very much a product of its times,” said Tryphena McShane, Team Leader Environmental Education. “However, its focus on simple living is a reminder of the teachings of St Francis of Assisi, who established the Friar movement almost 800 years ago.

“St Francis believed passionately in showing respect for the natural environment and placed great value on community life. These values are timeless. But I think they are especially relevant in today’s hitech, consumer oriented society.”

Participants in the Living Waters – Living Communities program will be encouraged to adopt environmentally sustainable practices in all aspects of their daily lives.

“Program organisers are looking for local ‘eco-team’ volunteers who are willing to embrace and promote environmentally sustainable lifestyles,” said, Mayor of Warringah Councillor Peter Moxham.

Simple measures that could be considered by participants might include the use of cloth bags for shopping and the installation of energy efficient light bulbs and/or water saver showerheads. They could also choose to cultivate native plants and/or vegetables in their gardens or on their balconies.
