Mornington Peninsula Shire Council in the south east of Melbourne has an extensive road and infrastructure network. With a population of around 120,000, its beaches and wineries make it a very popular tourist area.
“There are at least five different sorts of ground conditions within the municipality, as well as a variety of climates and traffic volumes,” said Graham Gregson, Pavement Asset Officer.“The question is how to make better decisions about maintaining roads and getting value for the dollars spent.”
Mornington Peninsula uses Asset Map, a mobile data capture system to assist in this process.
“We customised the Asset Map product by altering the program to suit our needs,” Graham Gregson said. “It is an easy, user friendly program to operate. We record all road failures on this system. When we have carried out treatment work, we can go back later on to see if it worked.
“The greatest benefit of using Asset Map is the ability to meet the user’s own requirements. We are in a position to know the location and state of all infrastructure. Data entry is reasonably easy and quick.”
Using Asset Map, Council staff can track different treatments used to see what works best in which location.
Mornington Peninsula is currently developing a database that can be used by new employees who do not have a detailed knowledge of each area.
