Taking care of business

Local Government today involves much more than simply looking after roads, rates and rubbish. Queanbeyan is determined to run as a viable enterprise providing ratepayers with the best value for money. This commitment to efficiency is reflected in Council’s development of business plans, investment strategy and use of modern technology.

Using a team approach, involving elected Councillors, management and staff, Council has developed Business Plans for a number of its operations. The plans are easy to read so ratepayers can see how Council is carrying out its business. Such plans are particularly applicable for areas such as operating the Queanbeyan Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre, for a proposed new crematorium and in managing Council’s plant and machinery.

By linking principal activities with goals, functions and budgets as well as future directions, all presented in clear to understand tables, residents can see at a glance the business approach Council is using.

With respect to investments, Council is currently well ahead of set targets. Investments of reserves and surplus funds have been returning $1.8 million per annum, or nearly ten percent. Along with the aim of being debt free by 2004, this places the City’s coffers in a very healthy position.

In reducing debt, there must be an ability to judge which areas are best for investment to ensure that services are maintained both now and into the future.

Over the next three years up to $2 million is to be invested in information technology which will bring Council to the forefront of this technology, providing for greater efficiency and cost savings across the organisation.

Council’s Internet site provides the ability to download new software as soon as updated versions become available.

Investigations are underway for Queanbeyan to provide IT services for other authorities and neighbouring Councils. By sharing these resources with other Councils, as well as the benefits of greater productivity, some of the costs of this investment can be recouped.
