More than 80 experts

More than 80 speakers will be sharing their expertise at the Local Government Engineering Conference. These are just some of the papers being presented.

Developing a Landscape Masterplan

Chris Champion, Director Engineering Services, Holroyd City Council, will describe how his team has applied landscape masterplanning to the total urban landscape of their city area – a “site” of some 40 square kilometres with a population of 80,000 people.

How Secure is Your Community?

Jim Henshelwood from the City of Greater Geelong will discuss how careful planning of emergency response and recovery actions can help a community cope with natural disasters. His address will highlight some of the key issues that have arisen during crises in the United States and give examples of how they were addressed.

The New World of Corporatisation in Local Government

Hobart City Council is in the process of corporatising its outside workforce of 240 employees, one of the very few Councils in Australia to separate client and provider to that extent. Leyon Parker from the Council will discuss how the adoption of the New Zealand model without special enabling legislation is proving difficult to implement.

Learning from the British CCT Experience

Mike Hanrahan from Bega Valley Shire Council in NSW will discuss how Compulsory Competitive Tendering in Britain has forced unions, staff and Councils to negotiate working conditions with the common goal of survival.
