Playing to win in Launceston

Matters of environmental health are an important part of Local Government activity. Because they concern public well being, health and safety they are often fraught with legal implications and consequent issues of risk management.

The theme of this year’s Annual Conference of the Australian Institute of Environmental Health is ‘Playing to Win’ with the emphasis on positive thought and action to promote healthier, safer communities. It will be staged from 20-24 October at the Launceston Country Club Resort.

Delegates will be able to hear speakers and hold discussions, on a wide range of issues that influence public health outcomes, with colleagues from around the nation and overseas. Topics to be covered include the provision of UV protection at public gatherings, the effect of algal blooms on human health, catchment management, food safety and the implications of development in world heritage areas.

Some of the speakers to address delegates include Alan Eyles who will discuss Public Health in New Zealand, Glenys Lloyd on the National Arbovirus Strategy and Dr John Todd, who will talk on Urban Air Pollution Issues for Local Government.

During the Conference, delegates will have the opportunity to enjoy the area’s historic sites and beautiful Tasmanian scenery, including a technical tour designed to give an overview of land management practices in the Sidling area of Northern Tasmania. Herbicide use, species regeneration and environmentally friendly harvesting methods will all be covered on the tour.

For further information, contact the Conference Secretariat, telephone (03) 6391 8797.
