Leader in sustainable development

The City of Mandurah is recognised as a leader in sustainable development in Western Australia. Its strength in this area highlights why Mandurah was selected to host the National Conference, Best Practice Planning and Design for Sustainable Development, to be staged on 27-30 May.

Situated one hour’s drive south of Perth, the City of Mandurah has worked to maintain a country town feel during its evolution into a city. Throughout this progressive period, Council has addressed the principal needs of development via its commitment to Local Agenda 21.

This commitment has been taken on board by both the community and Council through the adoption of the Community Charter and Corporate Plan. The first of its kind in Western Australia, the document involved broad consultation with the community. This included representatives from the business/tourism industry, environmentalists, community groups, youth and Council staff.

This consultation has ensured that future plans include the provision of services and facilities, city infrastructure, economic growth and employment prospects, all of which must be addressed while protecting the natural environment and the lifestyle for which Mandurah is renowned.

The City of Mandurah invites delegates, from across Australia to share its vision, and experience first hand achievements to date, when participating in the 1998 Best Practice Planning and Design for a Sustainable Future. Council is currently calling for papers and case studies.
