Communities working together

During the recent National Reconciliation Week, Alice Springs Public Library aided the cause by displaying a range of information, resources and other material to generate a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

With the theme of the week being ‘Communities Working Together’, the Library offered everyone in the community the opportunity to support the reconciliation cause and explore local Indigenous people’s culture.

Creator of the display, Dale Tuzewski, said that while Library resources specifically relating to reconciliation are limited, the collection contains a large number of items dealing with numerous Aboriginal issues.

These include the Dreamtime and mythology, history, art, Mabo, religion, native food and medicine, education and the stolen generation. The display was split into two sections, with a book display near the central circulation desk, where it could be perused by local borrowers. A general display near the Internet terminals attracted the attention of visitors to the Town.

“In addition, the Library also has a collection of children’s books and videos covering selected Aboriginal topics,” Dale said.

He added that people are showing strong support for reconciliation and are increasingly exploring ways to learn about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

“Our aim is to give people a continual awareness and access to information they need so they can be properly informed when they have a query on any issue or matter of concern,” he said.
