Ipswich City Council believe’s its revolutionary new museum known as Global Arts Link will take the arts world by storm. The new concept museum and art gallery will occupy the old Town Hall in Ipswich.
It combines the heritage value and civic history of that building with the new style interactive, visual art and social history museum. It is a crucial part of the revitalisation of the Ipswich Central Business District which aims at creating a dynamic union of culture heritage and business.
Ipswich used the opportunity provided by International Museums’ Day celebrations in Brisbane to launch a brochure outlining the centre’s development.
“The recognition Global Arts Link has received at today’s arts event signals the fact that the project is gradually becoming the ‘buzz word’ in the arts industry,” said Councillor Paul Pisasale, Ipswich Arts Foundation Deputy President.
“With everything from the use of the latest technology in visual arts presentation, to providing a fun art area for children, Global Arts Link will set a whole new standard for art museums and cultural centres around Australia and the world.”
Various taskforce and reference groups provided the opportunity for community input to the project. The museum’s exhibition spaces will include a Major Exhibition Gallery, and an Early Childhood Gallery.
It will also include an Indigenous component combining stories of the Indigenous history of the Ipswich region with traditional art and multimedia displays. This will contribute to the ongoing process of reconciliation embraced by the Ipswich community. Completion of the Global Arts Link project is expected to be early in 1999.
The opening exhibition will be ‘Cultural Protocols’ exploring how different communities respond to their environment according to their culture and circumstances. It will include four major artworks from the City’s namesake the Ipswich Borough Council Christchurch Mansion & Wolsey Art Gallery in England.
