Tas community info

A statewide community information network to augment the work of Councils is the aim of a new initiative of Glenorchy City Council. Glenorchy has invited other Tasmanian Councils to become partners in their Community Info-line.

Providing an information and referral service for local communities, it puts Councils in touch with local networks. With the imminent phasing out of the State Library’s Tasmanian Index of Community Organisations, Glenorchy believes the service will be invaluable to Councils.

The Community Info-line can produce publications such as brochures, directories and calendars. It can also promote Council services and local events and provide instant mailing lists for Council activities.

The service is based on an inhouse database and comes with a freecall helpline across southern Tasmania. A website provides 24 hour access to information, which includes a school holiday program, events listing and much more. The service allows for integration with other providers. Government services such as the Women’s Health Service have already joined the network.

The more partners the service has, the cheaper it will be to deliver. Glenorchy hopes other Councils will recognise the opportunity to develop better relationships with their communities and join the network bringing their ideas and suggestions.
