Speed gun slows motorists to safe speed

“The shocking road statistics throughout NSW over the Christmas period show we need to take action to raise the awareness of the community in taking care on our roads,” said Kogarah Mayor Graeme Staas.

And Kogarah is doing just that, with a campaign to reduce accidents by using a speed gun.

In a 12 month trial, Council is using the laser gun to display vehicle speeds and a slow down message. So far the trial has found drivers drop their speed by 4-12 kph when confronted with the graphic reminder.

“We want to reduce speeding and accidents on our local roads by increasing driver and community awareness of speeding,” Graeme Staas said.

In addition, Council has also introduced 50 kph speed limits on all residential streets near parks where children play, shopping centres and restaurants.

“Travelling at lower speeds improves a driver’s ability to stop quickly and avoid an accident,” Graeme Staas said.

“By reducing speeding on our roads we are making our community a safer and quieter place to live.

“We encourage other Councils to raise speed awareness in the community and reduce speeding on their roads.”
