Codes provide fair play for young people

In an effort to promote fair play in children’s sport the ASC has developed the AUSSIE SPORT Codes of Behaviour for clubs, schools and local Councils. These Codes provide a basis for fair play for young people.

The Codes of Behaviour are a set of key principles on which young players, parents, coaches, spectators, officials, administrators, teachers and the media should base their sporting involvement.

The ASC has also developed, in conjunction with the Hillary Commission in New Zealand, an educational resource ‘Your Kids Their Game’. Comprising a book and video this assists Councils, clubs and schools to work with parents and caregivers to dispel the ‘ugly parent’ in sport.

The resource offers strategies for local Councils, clubs and schools to encourage children to continue their involvement in sport through the following.

  • Outlining for adults why children participate in sport and how to positively encourage that participation
  • Identifying for adults why sports should be modified
  • Encouraging adults to treat children as children
  • Assisting adults identify if they are putting too much pressure on their child
  • Providing strategies for Councils, clubs and schools on how to encourage parents and spectators to be positive and supportive on the sideline during children’s sport
  • Providing strategies for Councils, clubs and schools to assist adults ensure that their child’s participation in sport is worthwhile and enjoyable.

To ensure that ugly parenting is not on your agenda, you can check out the Codes of Behaviour on our web site www.ausport.gov.au/partic/ypwork.html

Order a copy of the Codes of Behaviour, Your Kids their Game or any other Active Australia publication by contacting the ASC on phone (02) 6214 1915 or fax (02) 6214 1995.

And remember, an ugly parent is not a supportive parent!
