Tas LG history captured on video

At Tasmania’s recent Local Government Annual Conference delegates previewed a special Local Government History video.

The video, commissioned by the Local Government Association of Tasmania, places the development of Local Government in Tasmania in the context of the State’s early history. It traces Local Government from its infancy as local boards of trustees, established primarily to maintain roads, through to modern times.

Viewers can ponder changes which have taken place in Local Government reflecting the changing priorities of residents and society in general.

These include changed voting procedures, from a time when landholders could have multiple votes depending on the number of properties owned, and when municipal boundaries were determined by travelling time being no more than a day by horse from the municipal centre!

A complimentary copy of the video has been distributed to all Tasmanian Councils. LGAT Communications Coordinator Allyson Warrington said the video has proved very popular with many Councils ordering additional copies.

She said many of the Conference sponsors also purchased their own copies. Plans are now underway to distribute the video to Tasmanian schools.

The State Department of Education has congratulated LGAT on its production. The Department commented that ‘the video is a valuable record of this aspect of Tasmania’s history’.
