Territory grant supports community events

A grant of $51,500 from the Northern Territory Government will be used by Alice Springs Town Council to improve sporting facilities and part fund the employment of a Major Events and Recreation Coordinator.

Mayor Andy McNeill said the community is grateful for the funding and noted that a cooperative approach between the two spheres of government will assist with major developments in Alice Springs.

“It is obvious that both levels of government recognise community services and community development programs underpin the quality of life for the citizens of Alice Springs,” he said.

He said the Council is continuously looking for ways to increase access to and improve the use of its sporting and recreation facilities. Funding will go towards providing improved car parking and traffic flow at a popular local oval and increased shade provision at other facilities.

The remainder of the funding will assist the appointment of a Major Events and Recreation Coordinator. An immediate responsibility of this new officer will be to ensure the smooth running of the opening celebration of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay. Andy McNeill said the running of this event to ensure the whole community can take part is a major priority of Council.

He said the Coordinator will be responsible for an event which will showcase Central Australia and its culture, enhance community development and achieve economic benefits for the Town.

Up to 1,000 international media representatives are expected in Alice for the celebration which will take place on 8 July 2000 – the day the torch arrives in Australia.

“Hosting the first of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay Community Celebrations next year will be an exceptional opportunity for the people of Alice Springs to share in and promote our lifestyle, unique character and environment to the world,” Andy McNeill said.
