Clever camera cleans up Brimbank

Melbourne’s Brimbank City Council is using a high tech infra red camera to quickly and safely check drainage pits and storm water drains for blockages. The inhouse designed ‘PitCam’ was developed to reduce the risk of workplace injury from lifting heavy pit covers and to improve productivity.

Placed inside the drain the device records rubbish and blockages while the operator can view the contents on a screen, quickly identifying where the drain needs attention.

Mayor Brooke Gujinovic praised the Cleansing Department for this innovation. “PitCam is another example of Council developing new technologies and solutions,” she said. “We are constantly on the look out for new technologies and solutions for bringing our community better service.

“No longer must our cleansing staff physically lift or arrange for trucks to lift drain lids to check for problems.” Brooke said the device would not only save time but would also reduce the risk of injuries in the workplace.
